Knock Out – Latest Movie Review

October 15th, 2010 admin No comments

Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Kangna Ranaut, Irfan Khan, Gulshan Grover

Director: Mani Shankar

Rating: *

Knock Out should have been called ‘Knock Off. This one rips off Phone Booth, a Hollywood film that stuck a pleased-with-himself- publicist in a phone booth for the length of the film. If he leaves, he will be shot. It was a unique proposition, superbly executed.

In Knock Out, Irrfan takes on Farrells role and Sanjay Dutt steps into sniper Kiefer Sutherlands shoes. There can be been intelligent thefts: Knock Out is a brainless mess.

Bachchu (Irrfan) is a bagman who helps transfer illegal funds from India for corrupt politicians (Grover). Dutt is the patriotic Indian who wants people like Bachchu to confess to their sins, via TV reporters (Ranaut) who sport killer stilettos and tight short skirts when they go on shoots.

Mani Shankars films have patriotism as their abiding theme, and hes done a couple of decent films before. But this beggars belief. In an attempt to appear a man of the world capable of wearing Gucci loafers and Rolex watches, Irrfan flings his long curly locks about and blabbers. Its hard to make an actor of Irrfans calibre look ineffectual; this film manages it effortlessly. Dutt spends his time toggling between a rifle and a blue-tooth device. And Ranaut, playing the kind of TV reporter we hope will never grace a crisis-ridden spot, displays an utter lack of credibility.

Aakrosh Latest Movie Review

October 15th, 2010 admin No comments

Cast: Ajay Devgn, Akshaye Khanna, Paresh Rawal, Bipasha Basu

Director: Priyadarshan

Rating: **1/2

Two CBI officers arrive in a small town in Bihar. Theyve come to investigate the disappearance of three young men, who were last sighted here. In short order, they run into a local police department which behaves like its in the Wild West, petrified locals who refuse to open their mouths, and deep-seated caste prejudice. Both the citified Sidhant ( Khanna) and the more attuned-to-rural-ways Pratap ( Devgn) are left going around in circles.

For those accustomed to Priyadarshans loud comedies, heres a chance to sample one of Priyadarshans loud actioners. The arrival of the two men from Delhi shakes up the town which lives in the dark ages: the dalits are the oppressed, the thakurs and the brahmins are the lords and masters. The new lords are the politicians and the police, and they join hands in keeping those that should neither be seen nor heard in their place.

Everything about this film is so loud that it can do serious damage to your ear-drums. Everyone, including brutal cop (Rawal) and his cohorts, goes about killing and beating and stabbing. Just in case anyone is feeling left out, Priyan stuffs in a religious angle, with trishul-bearing thugs going around the countryside stringing up those up that dare to protest.

All of this overwhelms the film so much that you nearly forget that its main thread is that awful euphemism called honour killings. Turns out that one of the young men, a dalit, was involved with a local girl, whose high-caste family comes under the scanner. Turns out that everyone is involved in the cover up. And turns out that bad cops wife (Basu, in a serious case of bad acting), who also happens to be Prataps ex-girl-friend, is hiding something.

Khichdi, The Movie

October 2nd, 2010 admin No comments

Director: Aatish Kapadia

Cast: Anang Desai, Supriya Pathak, Rajeev Mehta, Nimisha Vakharia

Rating: **

Okay, this one is strictly for those who love Khichdi, the serial, with a passion, and miss it enough to want to watch the movie, which plays out like four or five extended episodes.

The plot is an apology. Or maybe the film didnt really need a plot, just the semblance of something vaguely resembling one for an excuse to gather everyone and get them to do exactly what theyve been doing on TV:

Babujis chief job seems to be to keep pushing the Parekh familys khatara car from one place to another, Hansa and Praful and Jaishree fill up lots of time with their one-liners and Himanshu gets to romance pretty Parminder, who lives across the road. The film shifts back and forth from an all-Gujju milieu to an all-Punju one and everyone talks of eating and eats all the time.

The colours are bright. The lines are loud. And you can see a joke coming a mile off.

Anjaana Anjaani Movie Review, Story

Strange and Strangers

Anjaana Anjaani

Director: Siddharth Raj Anand

Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Zayed Khan, Tanvi Azmi

Rating: ** and

Two strangers meet on a bridge in the middle of the night, both trying to off themselves. After that its all about stayin alive till the agreed-upon date: some days down the line, they will meet again, same time, same place, and finish what they had started.

Very Hollywood rom com type, huh? Absolutely. Despite its homegrown name, Anjaana Anjaani is quintessentially an NRI film, whose good-looking characters shuttle between New York and San Fran and Vegas, and talk in Hindi but think in English. When Kiara (Chopra) tells Akash (Kapoor): Chalo yeh karte hain , you hear her say, lets do this.

For the record, Akash has decided to do this because of a huge loss of savings and face in the stock market crash. And also because hes a jerk, unmindful of friends and family, whos been called on it.

Kiara, perfect name for feckless NRI chick, has been dumped. Or does she do the dumping? Her unfaithful boyfriend (Zayed Khan) is not clear on this. Neither are we.

The screenplay doesnt bother itself with too many details, resulting in us being treated to Ranbir and Priyanka practically living on the screen: we get only fifteen minutes of Zayed Khan (not that we mind too much), and ten minutes of everyone else (which includes a lecture about life and love from Tanvi Azmi playing a doctor, and a bunch of extras standing in as friends and family).

Robot Movie Review, Story

October 2nd, 2010 admin No comments

Director: Shankar

Cast: Rajinikanth, Aishwarya Rai, Danny Denzongpa

Rating:***

If I had a choice, I would have headed off to Enthiran , wherein I could have experienced Rajinikanth the way he is meant to: in Tamil, surrounded by swooning devotees armed with camphor and coconuts. Alas, I have to make do with Robot , in which a dubbed-in-Hindi Rajini goes by the unexpected name of Vashikaran, and in which, expectedly and magnificently, sensation triumphs over sense.

As befits a Rajini film made by Shankar, Robot is a spectacle. Rajini plays his version of a mad professor, immersed in the creation of a never-seen-before machine, with no time for his lovely girlfriend Sana (Rai). The robot is, but naturally, a Rajini lookalike. And the stage is set for the primal conflict between good and evil, man and machine, overseen by the towering presence of the one and only Rajinikanth.

To fully enjoy this nearly three-hour extravaganza, you have to be willing and able to buy into the Rajini myth. The one that says that the superstar can do anything and get away with it. And this we can tell you, Rajini makes it easy. He strides on with complete conviction, sweeping all absurdities of script out of the way, and holds you in compact with a wink and a smile. It works, most of the time.

Vashi creates Chitti-the-robot in his own image, just the way the Almighty did man. There are all kinds of throwaway allusions to god and creation, but Shankar treads lightly around the moral and ethical issues that arise out of the films primary focus: Vashi loves Sana, ergo Chitti loves Sana too. Yes, machines too can have feelings. They can be misused by evil people.

Understanding movies through the lens of gender, story, morality and art

September 11th, 2010 admin No comments

The Problem

A good movie review is so much more than the number of stars after the movie title. I know that’s what most people want to see, but think about it. A movie producer has just invested $60M and the director has given two years of his life. Do you really think they want to see that reduced to a casual two second glance at the number of stars following the title? I know the internet has turned us all into ADD consumers that have lost the ability to process through written information thoughtfully, but really! Think about the art forms and how they blended together to bring the film to life. Consider this before passing your “two star” judgment. In this article I will attempt to describe four artistic lenses that craft a movie so that when you see your next blockbuster epic or quiet romantic comedy, you will have a greater appreciation for what the film makers have attempted to do.

Genre

This is the start button for every movie. The pitch to the studio money people begins, “It’s a __________ about …” The blank is the genre. Romantic comedy, drama, horror, action/adventure, buddy movie, coming of age movie, etc. Genre is the first lens we look through in unpacking a movie. It defines how the story will unfold, the pace of the editing, the musical theme as well as the incidental music, even the costumes and lighting will be determined by the genre. Each genre has its own set of rules, but genres also are reinvented and redefined successfully by Hollywood’s more creative movie makers. Barry Levinson’s “Rain Man” broke several genre rules but successfully told a very dramatic and engaging story about two brothers setting out on a cross country journey of discovery. Being able to identify the elements of genre in the movie will clarify why the movie is what it is.

Story

The next lens is story. When story is combined with genre the filmmaker’s intent and purpose in making the film becomes clear. Look carefully at each character as they are introduced and trace their arc. When and where do the arcs cross? When do they run parallel? The length of the arc indicates the character’s importance. Is the character introduced to set something up later. When the movie is over, remember the main characters’ introduction and story arc. Was it resolved or left open.

Morality

Every movie has a moral message. It is impossible to tell a story and not have a moral. The message of the film maker will be seen through the moral lens and remembered as we leave the theater. Moral messages include: Good always wins over evil. Nice guys finish last. The bad things you do in secret will be publicly exposed. The morality of the movie can be positive or negative. Horror movies usually end with everyone getting killed except for that final one who either defeats evil or escapes to fight evil another day.

Art

The artistic lens will reveal a movie’s longevity. If care was taken to creatively tell a story by expanding its genre, and revealing well formed characters with developed arcs, the film will become a classic. Every year the movie “Somewhere In Time” is celebrated on Mackinac Island, Michigan at the Grand Hotel. When the movie was first released in 1980, the box office was disappointing. But, when it began showing on cable TV, the artistic beauty of the well told romantic story captivated thousands of viewers. In 1990 the International Content Syndication Network of Somewhere In Time Enthusiasts was formed to plan the Mackinac Island event that became an annual celebration. In 2010 they will celebrate their 20th anniversary when the movie turns 30 years old. Its moral theme of timeless love still causes the movie’s fans to celebrate.

All That To Say…

…While we often are fans of particular movie stars, when you decide to go to a movie, look to see who’s directing the film. The film is their vision and the actors are only playing out the parts.Three movies later, they’ve usually established a moral history that will be repeated in future movies.

Revisit your movie experience through these lenses. Don’t be quick to pass judgment based on your personal opinion. The movie is over and the credits are rolling. Think about everyone who worked on the movie and how they contributed to the genre, story, morality, and art of the film. Do you think the director was able to accomplish what he and the producers set out to do? Read through the films reviews. Do you agree or disagree? ladies evening wear – Michael Jackson’s “This Is It”

August 31st, 2010 admin No comments

Michael Jackson’s This Is It, directed by Kenny Ortega and is being produced with the full support of The Estate of Michael Jackson. The movie opens in theaters worldwide (including the UK, Ireland, and the Philippines) on October 28th, with tickets that went on sale September 27th. This motion picture is the behind-the-scenes look accumulated from more than 100 hours of footage captured in high definition, with state-of-the-art digital sound.Comprised of Jackson’s final rehearsals as he cultivated, assembled, and rehearsed for his concerts that was scheduled to take place beginning this summer.

“THIS IS IT” will be released only for an extraordinary, limited, two-week engagement worldwide. A preview trailer has already been released, with the premiere accuring over on Myspace. It is also said, that a DVD of the movie maybe produced later this year including a soundtrack that is thought to have a never before heard song on it. There has been much deliberation already over the movie. Some think it could be a documentary on his life, while others think its about the concert series, and there’s even more spectators that believe its a conspiracy movie about his life. Included in the movie will be performances while rehearsing for his upcoming tour, vocal lessons, ladies evening wear rehearsal, and Michael having one on ones with the camera. There is without a doubt great anticipation of this movie being the number one highest earning movie of this year. It is estimated that around 95% of the profit made from the film will go to the estate and then will be rerouted to the trust fund Michael had setup for his kids before he died.

The artist and entertainer died at age 50 on June 25, less than three weeks before the tour was scheduled to take off. Conclusively, the documentary was done to commemorate Michael Jackson’s development in creating his comeback concerts that were to take place prior to his death.

Terminator Salvation Online – leversets

Enter 2009′s Terminator: Salvation. Now, everything is in the future, the year 2018, when the Planet Earth is now a nuclear wasteland and where big and bad robots.
As with any franchise, the movie stayed faithful to the rendition of the Terminator endoskeletons: skull faces with red eyes. And yet Terminator: Salvation offered its own additions to the Terminator universe by putting in the silver screen some of the scarier robots of Skynet. There are the giant Harvester which may be slow but can precisely collect surviving people and haul them off to their laboratories in order to create robots with flesh and blood. There are also the nimble Hunter-Killers which were more prominent in this film than ever before. To complete the domination of Skynet of the land, the air, and the sea, the movie also showed Hydrobots which are eel-like creatures made to squirm with the same smoothness. It was very awe-inspiring to see how Marcus Wright and all the other human characters face off with these heavily-armed robots.
Movie Reviews
The special effects department of Terminator: Salvation also had an important part of the franchise’s history because it was the last film created by Stan Winston, the special effects supervisor of the first three Terminator films. Winston, who was tasked by the director McG, to create expansive leversets for the action sequences. Winston died on June 15, 2008 because of multiple myeloma and in his place were John Rosengrant and Charlie Gibson. Some of the interesting additions of the new team were the motion capture technology used on the face of Marcus Wright when the endoskeleton part of his skull was revealed and the use of a 20-foot model building as a springboard to the explosion scene of a 30-storey building.
