Liuzzi handed five place grid penalty

July 23rd, 2011 admin No comments

NUERBURGRING, Germany (Reuters) – Hispania’s Vitantonio Liuzzi will have a five-place grid penalty for Sunday’s German Formula One Grand Prix after an unscheduled gearbox change, stewards said in a statement on Saturday.

As the Italian did not finish the last race in Britain and this is the second time he is using a replacement gearbox before the end of five consecutive races, he must drop five places.

The penalty effectively means Liuzzi is likely to be at the back of the grid since he has yet to qualify this season higher than 21st of the 24 drivers.

Qualifying takes place at 1200 GMT.

Cielo’s rivals concerned over CAS ruling

July 23rd, 2011 admin No comments

SHANGHAI — While other athletes continue to express concern over the doping ruling for Cesar Cielo, swimming governing body FINA has announced it is “actively considering” adopting a biological passport program.

Cielo, the Olympic and world champion, was cleared to compete at the world championships Thursday after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld a decision by the Brazilian swimming federation.

FINA had challenged a Brazilian federation decision to give Cielo only a warning after he tested positive for furosemide, a banned diuretic and masking agent, at a meet in Rio de Janeiro in May.

Cielo said he consumed the drug in a contaminated batch of a food supplement he regularly used.

Other recent doping cases involving furosemide have seen athletes banned for up to 14 months.

“I was told numerous times to take measures that whatever you put in your body you’re responsible for,” American sprinter Jason Lezak said Saturday. “Obviously there’s new laws now than over the 15 years that I’ve been swimming, so hopefully people will learn from this and move on. But right now I don’t think there’s a lot of happy people around (the pool).”

Decisions for two other Brazilian swimmers — Nicholas Santos and Henrique Barbosa — were also upheld, while the CAS gave Vinicius Waked, who had previously served a two-month ban for a separate doping offense, a one-year ban.

FINA had appealed for three-month bans for Cielo, Santos and Barbosa; and requested a one-year ban for Waked. Cielo — who won the 50-meter freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and swept the 50 and 100 frees at the last worlds, is the only one of the four Brazilians competing here.

Biological passports contain continuously updated blood profiles for athletes like those currently used in cycling. Variations from the profile could indicate doping.

“I’m convinced (Cielo) is a champion, no matter what — it’s the system that doesn’t work, and that’s what worries me,” said two-time world champion Filippo Magnini of Italy. “I’m going to race against him and I’ll shake his hand and try to beat him like I always have, but this has created a dangerous precedent.

Doping cases involving supplements have varied greatly.

American swimmer Jessica Hardy withdrew from the U.S. team ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and was later ordered to serve a one-year ban despite the CAS accepting that she was not at fault for a contaminated dietary supplement.

Ukrainian tennis player Kristina Antoniychuk was banned for 14 months even though the International Tennis Federation accepted that furosemide was in a prescription medication.

Russia’s gymnastics body banned Kristina Goryunova for one year after she tested positive for furosemide at the 2010 national championships.

“I was always advised that whoever makes a mistake — whether it’s small or large, indirect or involuntary — will have to pay for it,” added Magnini, according to the ANSA news agency. “We’re tested continually and required to communicate where we are and at what time. It’s always stressful and then you see it’s all for naught because there’s no punishment.

“They’ve also hurt Cielo, because I don’t know how he’s going to present himself,” Magnini said.

FINA president Julio Maglione and executive director Cornel Marculescu said they had done all they could to settle Cielo’s case, and that the CAS ruling had to be accepted.

“We have always told the swimmers, ‘Be careful when you take a supplement, because you never know what you are taking. You don’t know what’s inside,’” Marculescu said.

“The range is huge — from a warning to two years — and I understand that there are swimmers and athletes and people who don’t understand why one gets six months and another get two years,” Marculescu added.

The reasons behind the CAS ruling won’t be released for several weeks.

“CAS is the final level you can go to and they made a final decision and we have to accept that,” said Australia head coach Leigh Nugent. “We are here to race the world championships and it’s unfortunate this issue has come on the eve.

“We have spoken to our team and I’ll observe my own advice — we can’t be distracted by this issue and it’s done and dusted and we are just going to get on with the racing and I’ll get on with preparing my team.”

According to Dr. Andrew Pipe, the chairman of FINA’s doping control review board, creating a biological passport is the only way to detect banned drug use.

“A proposal for a biological passport kind of program for FINA is now being actively considered, and I’m confident that progress will be made in that direction,” Pipe said.

“We know that the contemporary doping issues that all sports face relate not so much in the area of hormonal abuse, because that can be detected with conventional urine tests in or out of competition, but those agents which increase the properties of the blood so it increases the ability of the blood to carry oxygen,” Pipe added.

While the traditional swimming events don’t begin until Sunday, Pipe said 115 doping tests have already been conducted at these championships, with “several hundred” to be completed in all.

No positive tests have been reported so far.

Pakistan’s tennis star Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi has expressed his disappointment over his performance in the Davis Cup against South Korea

July 13th, 2011 admin No comments

Pakistan’s tennis star Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi has expressed his disappointment over his performance in the Davis Cup against South Korea.

Pakistan was beaten 0-4 by South Korea in the tie with Aisam losing in both singles and doubles matches.

“It was a pretty disappointing result for us because we tried very hard and played hard, but luck did not favour us at all,” The News quoted Qureshi, as saying.

He also pointed out that being forced to play away from home had affected the team’s performance.

“It does make a big difference as you lose home advantage. In normal circumstances you get a chance as host nation to practice and prepare on your home turf before a tie and that is always good,” Qureshi said. (ANI)

India coach Duncan Fletcher has praised the development of the West Indies team under new coach Ottis Gibson

July 13th, 2011 admin No comments

Bridgetown (Barbados), July 13 (IANS/CMC) India coach Duncan Fletcher has praised the development of the West Indies team under new coach Ottis Gibson.

His praise came in the wake of India’s 1-0 win over the hosts in the three-match Test series which concluded with a drawn game at Windsor Park in Dominica Sunday.

‘Under Ottis Gibson, the team is improving all the time. I have been with England here, I have seen them in England but the way they put it together here, they are moving up,’ said Fletcher.

‘If that improvement continues, I wouldn’t like to be part of another touring side and play them.’

The West Indies lost the first Test by 63 runs at Sabina Park in Jamaica last month but managed to hang on to draw the second Test in Bridgetown a fortnight ago.

Centuries from debutant Kirk Edwards and Shiv Chanderpaul also helped the West Indies earn a stalemate in the final Test against the world number one side.

Given precious little hope before the start of the series, the result was heartening for home fans and Fletcher agreed the side was slowly taking shape.

‘They bowled very well. Their batters slowly got better,’ he pointed out.

‘It’s not only on the field, the way they move off the field, their warm-ups, I take note of it. They looked a very professional unit.’

National Institute of Sports (NIS) Patiala who blew the whistle on the systemic doping of players, was assaulted by security personnel

July 13th, 2011 admin No comments
Sajib Nandi, a suspended doctor of the National Institute of Sports (NIS) Patiala who blew the whistle on the systemic doping of players, was assaulted by security personnel Wednesday when he tried to enter the sports complex to meet retired judge Mukul Mudgal who is probing the scandal.Nandi said security guards at NIS stopped him from entering the premises, saying they they had orders from senior Sports Authority of India (SAI) officials to bar his entry.

‘I was pushed and one person held my hand. They said that there were orders against my entry into the NIS premises. When I asked where the written orders were, they assaulted me,’ Nandi told reporters outside the NIS gates.

Nandi said he wanted to meet Mudgal, who has been appointed by the sports ministry to probe the systemic doping by athletes at NIS Patiala in recent years.

Eight Indian athletes had recently tested positive for taking banned performance enhancing drugs.

Quarter-milers Ashwini Akkunji, Mandeep Kaur, Sini Jose, Juana Murmu, Priyanka Pawar and Tiana Mary Thomas, shot-putter Sonia and men’s long-jumper Hari Krishnan Muralidharan have tested positive in dope tests conducted either out of competition or during an inter-state meet.

Ashiwini, Mandeep and Sini were members of the famed women’s 4*400 metres relay team that won the gold medal in last year’s Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games. Ashiwini also won the gold in the 400 metres hurdles at the Asian Games.

The doping scandal has led to sacking of Ukranian coach Yuri Ogorobonik, who trained the six women athletes who have tested positive for banned substances.

Sports Minister Ajay Maken said Monday that the government was planning to table a new law in the monsoon session of the parliament (beginning August 1) to curb the doping menace.

India won test series against the West Indies 1-0

July 11th, 2011 admin No comments

India wrapped up their series against the West Indies 1-0 today when the third and final test ended in a draw here after a fine fight back from veteran batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

India, who won the opening test in Jamaica then drew the last two, were 94 for three in their second innings, having been set 180 to win, when both captains decided for an early finish after tea on the fifth day.

West Indies saved the match after making 332 in their second innings, Chanderpaul finishing with an unbeaten 116 after putting on a crucial 37 over, 65-run partnership with Fidel Edwards (30) for the ninth wicket, stuff.co.nz reports.

Chanderpaul celebrated becoming the most capped West Indian in tests with his 23rd ton in a 133 tests and it was a typically gritty innings from the left-hander.

There was time enough for India to reach the target of 180 with around 47 overs expected to be available but their attempt got off to a poor start.

Edwards took the new ball and struck with the first delivery – trapping Abhinav Mukund leg before wicket.

Murali Vijay made a smart 45 before Rampaul had him caught by Bishoo and Raina was promoted to perhaps push along the run-rate but went for eight, caught and bowled by Rampaul, before the game ended prematurely.

India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni defended his team’s conservative approach at the close.

“We were risking a series win going after the target, we realised that it was not worth going for it after those wickets. We gave it a go but we are happy with the series win. It was a good exposure for the youngsters,” he said. (ANI)

Spain booked their place in the Davis Cup semi-finals against France

July 11th, 2011 admin No comments

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) – Spain booked their place in the Davis Cup semi-finals against France after taking an unbeatable 3-1 lead over the United States Sunday.

David Ferrer sealed the tie for Spain, who were without their top-ranked player Rafa Nadal, when he beat Mardy Fish 7-5 7-6 5-7 7-6 in the first of the two reverse singles rubbers after a titanic struggle that lasted more than four hours.

The dead rubber, scheduled to be played between Andy Roddick and Feliciano Lopez, was then called off with the result of the tie already decided.

“Spain have never beat USA in this country,” Spain’s non-playing captain Albert Costa said.

“To win against Roddick, Fish and the Bryans, I think this is a great team. For us it’s historic.”

Spain had won Friday’s two opening singles matches to seize control of the tie but the Americans gave themselves some hope of winning the best-of-five tie when the twins Bob and Mike Bryan won Saturday’s doubles.

“I’m very proud of all the guys for all the efforts they put in all the matches. We definitely laid it all out there,” U.S. captain Jim Courier said.

“We were ahead in a lot of sets but that’s never a guarantee against players that are strong and players that are professional.”

Spain, who have won the Davis Cup four times, in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2009, host France in the semi-finals in September after last year’s runners-up beat Germany 4-1.

France beat Spain 5-0 in the quarter-finals last year and Costa said his players were determined to avenge that loss.

“We have a generation of players that they are unbelievable,” Costa said. “So we have to try to take advantage of this and try to win as much as we can.”

Tour de France riders were furious after two of their number were injured in a crash involving a television car on Sunday’s ninth stage

July 11th, 2011 admin No comments

ST FLOUR, France (Reuters) – Tour de France riders were furious after two of their number were injured in a crash involving a television car on Sunday’s ninth stage.

Spaniard Juan-Antonio Flecha crashed to the ground while Dutchman Johnny Hoogerland went flying into a barbed-wire fence.

“He was lying in the barbed wire, completely in it, in the barbs, his pants were completely off, he was completely naked,” said Michale Cornelisse, the sports director of Hoogerland’s Vacansoleil team after rescuing his rider from a ditch.

“I just saw him flying through the air. He has deep cuts in his legs, he was going at 60 kph, it was unbelievable.”

Flecha was treated on his bike for an injured elbow while Hoogerland, with his legs bloodied, crossed the line 17 minutes after the stage winner.

The Tour’s new leader, Thomas Voeckler, who witnessed the incident as the car tried to overtake a group of five escapees he was part of, said: “It could have been me.

“Crashes in a descent are understandable, they’re part of the race. I’m not here to cause a controversy but there are enough risks as it is in a bike race without such a regrettable incident,” the Frenchman said.

“Organisers should take measures to protect riders,” said stage winner Luis-Leon Sanchez of Spain.

“Reckless driving is unforgivable in races and everywhere else,” said Leopard-Trek team manager Brian Nygaard.

France Television apologised for the incident on their Facebook page, saying: “We are obviously affected by the accident that occurred today in which a vehicle with the France Television tag on was involved.”

Organisers excluded the car driver from the race.

WATER REQUEST

“Thomas Voeckler asked for a bottle of water and I passed the message to the Europcar team car through the race radio asking the cars in the race to give way,” Tour director Christian Prudhomme told Reuters.

“The car (that sent the riders crashing) instead tried to overtake the riders, way too fast, and sent two of them down.

“We apologise to the riders and to the teams. It’s a scandal. There have now been two incidents involving the media on the roads of the Tour de France, and it’s two accidents too many.”

During the fifth stage, a photographer’s motorbike hit Nicki Sorensen and sent him to the ground.

Vacansoleil fellow team manager Hilaire Van der Schueren said the incident had seriously affected their race.

“We went from a situation where we could win the stage, take the climber’s jersey and progress overall to a situation when we don’t know whether Johnny will be able to continue,” he said.

Flecha’s Team Sky officials declined to comment on the incident.

“Everyone’s emotional now. We’ll look at the situation tomorrow and we’ll take the matter forward tomorrow,” said team manager Dave Brailsford.

Flecha and Hoogerland received the meagre consolation of being awarded a prize as the most aggressive riders in the stage.

The stage was earlier tarnished by a big pile-up in the peloton, forcing four men out, and three-times Tour champion Alberto Contador complained that the incident could have been avoided.

“These crashes happen because there is a lot of bad weather, a lot of narrow roads, but the bend should have been signalled,” he said.
