Why Good Collaboration Tools Are Worth Every Penny

September 13th, 2010 admin No comments

Collaboration is hot.

We’re seeing new collaboration solutions pop up left and right, all claiming to enhance team collaboration.

A huge mistake that many businesses are making, however, is turning to free “collaboration tools”. While “free tool” always sounds enticing, it also always means less functionality, less features and zero customer support.

If you’re serious about creating an organized system of information, improving communication between your team members and automating business procedures, you should get serious about investing in good online collaboration tools. A recent  Frost and Sullivan study revealed that of the thousands of companies surveyed, almost a half were investing in collaboration tools. What’s even more compelling, though, is that the more they invested into their collaboration solution, the higher ROI (return of investment) they saw.

Still not convinced? Here’s a look at specific examples of why collaboration tools are worth every cent of your investment.

1. Document Management

Document management tools should allow you to not only organize your files, but collaboratively revise and edit them online. Free apps might allow you to create documents and share them online- but this isn’t really any better than standard e-mail.

Paid collaboration solutions, however, come with document revision controls, which allow a team member to upload his or her file into a workspace where the other team members can review and edit it. There should also be a document revision history feature, so that any previous version of the document can be reinstated if necessary. Another essential document management feature is the ability to add comments to each file and choose who to notify when each comment is added. Finally, all of these documents are filed into online workspaces that you can set admin permissions to, so your docs are being seen by only the right people.

2.Task Management

Task management tools include online calendars, task lists, SMS/Text reminders and more. You might be thinking “Well, there are calendars and tasklist applications I can access online, for free.”  These free tools, while great for a student wanting to organize his or her personal schedule, don’t offer the deeper features that help businesses and professional teams effectively manage their schedules.

The online calendars in collaboration solutions like Central Desktop, however,  allow you to add an event, invite the attendees, schedule audio or web conferencing so remote team members can participate as well, set SMS/text reminders and select which workspace(s) can access the meeting information. Another example is that with more complex task lists, you can set a task, assign it to multiple team members, set a priority level and due date for the task, and request an update at any time. These are only two examples of the deep task management features of good collaboration solutions that free applications simply do not have. (Hence the saying, you get what you paid for. )

3. Project Management

Project management tools are the most important and sought after features in collaboration solutions. Free project management apps allow you to create a site for a project, usually set up as a wiki. You can share documents, images, create discussions and set up simple project to-do lists.

For most businesses, however, this simply isn’t  enough- especially when dealing with large scale projects. Businesses need project management features like time tracking, workflow systems and complex databases, all of which are features in the top collaboration solutions. Intranets and extranets are other essential features of project management tools. Intranets allow you to connect with your internal team members, and Extranets allow you to share files, plans, discussion threads and invoices with external members (clients, partners, vendors, etc) in an isolated workspace.

4. Security

Here is something that not enough companies consider before choosing free collaboration applications- is it safer to place your important and classified company data onto an open free application server, or is it better to place it into a trusted collaboration platform that has passed enterprise grade security requirements, has back-up data storage centers in isolated locations and has a team of professional IT support managing it? Surprisingly, not many companies realize that by trusting in several different free

Keyword Optimization – Your Idea is the Tick, Keywords Are Your BOMB! – Internet Casinos Accepting Americans

September 12th, 2010 admin No comments

Ever wonder how Internet Casinos Accepting Americans marketers become so successful? You see them all over the web and you think, “Wow! These guys are really getting things done, I wonder how?”. One of the answers is that they have mastered the art of keyword optimization. And make no mistake, it IS an artform, as you will soon see!
r
rWhat is keyword optimization?
r
rWhen a person opens up a search engine on their browser, they type in what they’re searching for, let’s say, dog leashes. The search engine then does a lighting fast search to find websites with the words ‘dog leashes’ in them. The search engine lists these websites in order of their keyword position, that is, which website has the most relevant information in relation to the keywords.
r
rLet’s say you sell pet products. As the advertiser, you want the searchers to land on your website as many times as possible. In order for this to happen, you increase your chances of having many people visit your site and spend money if your site pops up on a search. Optimally, it’s best to be in the top ten positions on any search.
r
rNow, the next question begs, “What is the best way to get a top ten position in a potential customer’s search?”. Well, this is where keyword optimization starts.
r
rIn setting up your pet products website or other marketing methods such as PPC, one of the options you have is to choose keywords that are most relevant to your website. For pet supplies, you might choose: leashes, pet food, aquariums, grooming, etc.. But it can go much deeper.
r
rIt’s important to know where to look to find relevant keywords for potential customers to search. There are many free tools available for you to use. Google, Yahoo, and MSN are two of the major search engines that offer this service. Using algorithms, they assess advertiser competition and general keyword usage by each web searcher on their respective site. They provide useful data for you the advertiser to use to maximize your knowledge of who’s searching for what. Poke around on these sites and learn these useful systems.
r
rIt gets very deep when you learn that keywords like, discount turtle food, exotic birds, ferret supplies, or lizard boutiques could be very useful tags (well, except for lizard boutiques!) for your website or ad campaign. You’ll find on these free keyword tools that the lists are endless when it comes to relevant keywords, no matter how specialized the niche!
r
rThe general rule of thumb to the number of keywords to use is about 20 – 30 words or phrases for your page. You can narrow down this list considerably if you use the information above and find out which are the most useful to you and your business.
r
rDo your own digging to find out how to maximize your exposure with keyword optimization. The difference between knowing and not knowing can make or break your advertising effort.

Take Me to the Other Side: Moral Responsibilities of Ghost Hunters as Related to Spirits and the Afterlife – free tools

September 11th, 2010 admin No comments

This article is an open query to all ghost hunters, paranormal investigators, psychics, mediums, parapsychologists, and theologians regarding the possible moral obligations concerning assisting certain types of ghosts–as defined as the consciousness of deceased persons possibly trapped in the material realm–to move on to ‘the other side.’

I am an amateur paranormal investigator with limited experience and many questions cross my mind, not only about the research and gathering ‘evidence’ of the paranormal, but also questions related to the moral, ethical, and spiritual aspects of this endeavor.

My question is this:

Do we have an obligation to assist ghosts in their transition to ‘the other side’?

The question is based on a series of assumptions as follows.

1. Ghosts are the consciousness of deceased humans and certain ghosts are ‘stuck’ in the material realm.

2. Some ghosts may be unaware that they are ghosts and/or they are unable to muster the actions/steps necessary to ‘move on.’

3. There is something beyond the material realm. A place or state exists that is a natural and probably desirable next step, and getting there is  necessary to complete the spiritual evolution of these free-floating ‘minds’ called ghosts.

4.  Thus we, as the living, being knowledgeable of the condition of their existence–and theoretically having the free tools to assist them in their spiritual evolution–should render this assistance.

The above assumptions possibly place us–as paranormal investigators and others concerned with the spiritual evolution of our species–in a unique position to be able to provide this assistance. If the assumptions above are true and/or you believe in ghosts, to not act based on these assumptions be could something akin to leaving Kitty Genovese bleeding on the street.

If you believe that people should be altruistic–that is being obligated and willing to help our fellow humans (and ghosts)–we should seriously consider this issue.

There is research that shows that humans can be altruistic. They certainly may demonstrate this trait. We operate in groups for the greater good and are social creatures. However, there is also social psychological research that demonstrates that we are very selfish, e.g. we may only clearly operate altruistically when it serves our own needs/ideals or that of our family. We may be unique in the animal kingdom considering our combination of altruistic and selfish traits. The discussion of  these psychological and sociological ideas certainly goes beyond the constrains of this article, but they do bear mentioning.

So, when considering this question, one has to look deep into oneself and society and consider whether your answer to the question is self-serving or genuinely altruistic.

Considering the popular television show Ghost Hunters, rarely do they televise cleansing efforts, involve religious authorities or psychics specific to this issue, and it appears that their activities in regards to their clients mostly involve educating their clients to paranormal phenomena with the tenet that knowledge reduces fear–and that there is really nothing to fear. At least for the humans involved.

This is just on the surface, and TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society) certainly provides more services than is discernable from their television show and  has demonstrated the capability to provide referrals to professionals and experts capable of operating under the assumptions I mentioned earlier.

Anyone that has done any background research on Grant, Jason, and Steve–the force behind TAPS– realizes that their paranormal experiences far exceeds what is able to be shown in an hour television show. For all the commercialization and debates to as to whether the ‘evidence’ they present is valid, they do deserve immense credit to bringing the realm of the paranormal–and implications on the spiritual evolution of the human race–to light and educating the general public in regards to these type of phenomena as genuine and legitimate human experiences.

Other television shows have a bent that lends themselves more toward addressing the possible  moral and ethical responsibilities that this article is questioning. Paranormal State, the team of young investigators and paranormal entrepreneurs from Penn State, definit

A Look At Google via spam

September 11th, 2010 admin No comments

Web Designers do not need to learn about SEO to make it easier for Google to index a website. Many web design firms use Google’s free tools to optimize a website for small business clients.
Matt Cutts made a ten-minute keynote speech in 2008, at a Web 2.0 conference, called “What Google Knows About Spam.”  This is a constant struggle for web design firms. SEO wants a website with balanced content.  Small businesses want content that sells their product.  Google doesn’t want to see anything that reflects spam. The video is available on his blog. It is an eye opening look into SEO and how hard Google hits spam. http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/what-google-knows-about-spam/  I refer to this one, because it is easy for a non-SEO pro to understand. Most web design firms, and web design professionals spend very little time learning SEO techniques.

Matt Cutts has worked for Google for 8 years. He wrote hundreds of articles on search engine placement and the dangers of spam. Most web designers are unaware that Google uses 128 different elements to rank, or penalize, a page. Most web designers focus on linking and ignore the rest.

Black hat SEO is nothing new. Keyword Spam is nothing new. Web designer and black-hat SEO services have always used keywords with no relevance on a website. These spam pages are now easy for search engines to recognize. They use script-generated content, are full of spelling mistakes, and keyword phrases. Or, the meta tags are not reflected in the content. Keyword text spam is often blended with the background, invisible on browsers, but picked up by search engines. One common trick is to make 1 index page for search engines, and 1 for the website.

Matt’s reminds web designers that Google has a tool to help become relisted if you inadvertently make a mistake:  google.com/web designers/. Any Web designer should register their website with this tool as soon as it goes live. If Google notices the website has been hacked, or the web designer, or small business, hired an unscrupulous SEO firm, then a notice is sent to the webmaster, and hopefully, the web designer. This addresses the situation before the web designer’s site is banned.

One of the most common complaints is that DIY web designers who follow all the rules, and their website are still excluded from indexing and Google’s rank. Cutts warns people that the secret to success is to write for people, not search engines, not for ad copy, and to make sure that you have a keyword density below 4%, and a keyword weight above 70%. This is not always possible, but it should be attempted. It is also important to run a website through a ‘search engine view’ SEO tool, to make sure that the keywords designated by the small business, are recognized by the search engine. In fact, it is common for search engines to consider Home and AboutUS as the primary keywords for a website.

Cutts says, new material falls into the common-sense category. It’s all about your small business. “If I’m a Denver Plumber in Iowa, I may want to write about some of the strange things that happen to me on the job, or the five most common ways to fix a toilet,” he says. “That kind of content can get really popular, and it’s a great way to get links.” Folks will post your piece on one of the social media sites. And with links comes higher Google rankings. (source: USAToday)
Here are a few tips to avoid problems.

Do not:
* build more than 50 links to a website in one week
* pay for links
* put paid links on your website
* stack keywords
* Let Keyword Density exceed 4%
* Have a Keyword Weight less than 60%
* link to FAA/directories/link farms
* make sure no one clones your web-pages
* Use doorway pages
* Use font the same color as the background
* Stack web pages with typos
* Clone pages
* Post a lot of reviews unless you use <no follow> codes

These should help protect your website from being banned and penalized. If the website/blog is already penalized, then fix the above problems. Sign into your Google Account and look on the right side of the dashboard. There is a ‘reconsideration’ link. Complete it, and

free tools – Have Fun in Cooking on a George Foreman Grill

September 11th, 2010 admin No comments

When it comes to convenience and enjoyment when cooking there are very few appliances in my kitchen that can compete with my George Foreman grill. While there are many different sizes and styles to the George Foreman line of grilling machines I have the George Foreman Next Grilleration Grill, which allows us to do almost anything on our grill. This grill even comes with the ability to make waffles in addition to all the wonderful meals that the traditional George Foreman grill can assist with when it comes to cooking.

This handy grill is completely awesome when it comes to cooking no matter what time of the day it is. For breakfast, you also have the option of using the flat grill in order to make pancakes, sausage, bacon, or eggs if that is your wish in addition to the ability to make waffles. For breakfast, this grill is divine and we’re just getting started for the day.

For lunch you can once again use the flat grill for making grill cheese sandwiches if that is your choice or you can use the traditional grilling grills in order to create paninis or quesadillas that are sure to please even the most selective member of your family when it comes to a quick, easy, and delicious lunch. If that doesn’t do the trick though you can also use the grills to make hot ham and cheese sandwiches or use your imagination to come up with a tasty combination of your very own. To get a little extra creative you could toss a few pineapple rings onto the grill for a tasty after lunch treat.

In the afternoon you can use your grill, believe it or not, to make homemade chocolate chip cookies. I’d be fairly willing to be that is one thing you never thought you’d be cooking on a grill. I know it was a surprise for me. When you buy the grill, if you decide to buy one of these, you will discover that there is a recipe for making your own chocolate chip cookies in the recipe booklet that comes with the grill. Of course there are other snack foods you can make with your grill as well just use your imagination.

When it comes to dinner, very few kitchen appliances offer quite the degree of diversity of my little George Foreman Grilleration when it comes to cooking. Another surprising recipe in the booklet is one for pizza and I have actually used my grill to make Shake and Bake chicken on more than one occasion. As far as free tools for cooking go in my kitchen this is one tool that is definitely tops. You can also make fish sticks or chicken nuggets and French fries on this nifty little grill if that is your wish.

In addition to the things I’ve mentioned above you can use your grill for making chicken, fish, steaks, pork shops, and many other delightful dishes if that is your wish. When it comes to this particular grill the plates are not only removable but also dishwasher safe. This means that clean up is quick and easy once the cooking is complete.

When it comes to cooking for you and your family, any little short cut to make things easier is a shortcut well worth taking. The George Foreman Grilleration is a great accessory to add to your kitchen that will make cooking easier day in and out.

free tools – Kitchen and Herb Gardens – Everything You Need To Know About

September 10th, 2010 admin No comments

Throughout history, people have grown culinary, medicinal and cosmetic plants in their gardens. The Romans grew vines, fruit, vegetables, medicinal and culinary herbs all over their empire, as did the monks in their European monasteries. Such gardens were usually formal, and often decorative, but were essentially practical in purpose.

By Tudor times, the monk’s productive gardening had evolved into a more ornamental style: the Elizabethans confined these rather informal plants in trimmed geometric shapes called ‘knots’. In the eighteenth century, kitchen gardens became somewhat unfashionable in Europe, amongst the rich at least, but, by the late nineteenth century, their popularity revived, especially in Scotland, where the necessity for walls to protect flowers as well as vegetables ensured the kitchen garden’s enduring popularity.

In the UK, ornamental kitchen gardening is becoming increasingly popular, as it can offer a practical solution to the problem of space: even a small potager (ornamental kitchen garden) can be both productive and decorative, incorporating a wide range of plant and garden features. Old techniques of fruit-training have been resurrected, and the restricted forms of fruit trees available today are ideal for smaller gardens. Antique vegetable and herb varieties have also been revived.

Any kitchen and herb garden should be sited in an accessible position, where plants can be reached and tended easily, and as such they are normally situated in an area relatively close to the house. Hedges can be used for screening, although walls will offer the additional benefit of providing a surface upon which to train fruit. Alternatively, an attractive and productive boundary may be made by growing fruit as cordons or espaliers, trained on posts and wires. There should be good wide paths to service the area, to allow room for free tools, barrows and to tend crops. There should also be space for cold frames, compost, a shed, greenhouse and possibly an incinerator.

Flowers are often an integral part of the ornamental kitchen garden, and these do not need to be restricted to flowering herbs, or edible flowers like nasturtiums and marigolds. Sweet peas are a very popular addition, as are honeysuckles, artemisias and tobacco plants.

Although vegetables can be grown in designated sections, they can also be used to enhance a garden border or to create an ornamental potager. Globe artichokes, savoy cabbage, marrows, Florence fennel and pumpkins can all contribute architectural shape to such a garden. Rhubarb also provides a good-looking and useful source of ground-cover. Many vegetables, fruits and herbs thrive when planted in containers, and certain types, such as strawberries, look particularly striking grown in pots.

Herbs almost always look attractive – in early summer, at least – and have the bonus of flowers and, even more importantly, scent. Herb gardens can be designed formally in some kind of herb wheel or parterre, where the divisions will help to keep rampant root systems in check, or allowed to grow and spill over informally. Plants such as rosemary, thyme and sage are particularly popular, and can be used throughout the garden.
